Jing Fang

“He who cheats the Earth will be cheated by the Earth.”

-Chinese proverb

The great medical traditions of the world: Oriental Medicine, (China, Japan, Korea, Vietnam); Ayurvedic Medicine (India, Pakistan, Bangladesh); Arab and Persian traditional medicine; Indigenous medical traditions (North, South, Central America); Australia, Oceania and Europe have always relied on plants as food and medicines. Some of the most powerful pharmaceutical drugs today come from plants.

  • Penicillin- derived from fungus penicillium
  • Powerful painkillers; morphine and codeine- derived from the Poppy Papaver somniferum
  • Anti-cholesterol statin drugs- derived from the oyster mushrooms Pleurotus ostreatus
  • The anti-rejection drug Cyclosporine- derived from the fungus Tolypocladium inflatum
  • The anti-cancer drug krestin- derived from the Turkey tail mushroom- Trametes versicolor
  • TAXOL the powerful chemotherapeutic agent- derived from the yew plant Taxus canadensis
  • The analgesic aspirin (acetylsalicylic acid)- derived from the Black Willow tree Salix nigra

To name a few but plants have contributed to pharmaceutical medicine. Plants, as opposed to their pharmaceutical derivatives, have retained all of their molecular and synergetic complexity, are very safe, have no harmful side effects and if used properly are effective therapeutic agents.

Plants can be: anti inflammatory, antimicrobial, anticancer, antispasmodic, analgesic and act as powerful antioxidants. They can lower cholesterol, regulate blood pressure and blood sugar, as well as improve cognitive function and eliminate anxiety and depression. Most importantly, plants regulate and strengthen the immune system, making plants human’s best friend.
